July 2014 books and anime update

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 5, 2014, 10:38 AM
Sorry for the delay! Since the beginning of the month, I kept thinking that I should write parts of this post in advance but I never got around to actually doing it. Realizing at the end of the month that I had to write everything at once because I procrastinated... made me want to procrastinate even more. But today is the day I stop procrastinating!

Books read in July 2014

:bulletblue: Puella Magi Kazumi Magica volume 3 (Manga)
With this volume, the story finally seems to be getting somewhere (I felt it wasn't really the case before. The events just didn't appear to be contributing anything to the plot, or what had been presented as the plot, in my opinion. Either it is a pacing issue or everything will suddently make sense in retrospect after the end xD).

:bulletblue: Unfinished Tales by J.R.R. Tolkien
More Tolkienverse mythology! I've read all the main books now (The Hobbit, LotR, the Silmarillion and this one). I've also watched the three LotR movies (in full version X_x). This book was a bit harder to read than the others, even the Silmarillion, because some of the chapters are actually unfinished, the story stops in the middle of things and the rest is summed up by the editor. Nonetheless, I found it interesting because it provides lots of detail and background information. ^_^

:bulletblue::bulletblue::bulletblue: Inkheart trilogy (Inkheart, Inkspell and Inkdeath) by Cornelia Funke (French translation) (Reread)
It had been a while since I had read these books, and at some point I realized that I had completely forgotten what happened in books 2 and 3 except for a few elements. So, I just reread the three of them. Afterwards, I also rewatched the movie.
I could write pages and pages about these books, but I'll try to be brief. These are teen / YA books, probably meant for kids age 10-15, but they're GOOD children's books. What I like about them is that they're very poetic in tone, and the story is quite original. The first book is really delightful, and so is its movie adaptation. I'm a bit more reserved about the other two books, because although they contain new and interesting developments, I felt that the story sometimes repeats itself a little. The movie adaptation of the first book changes the ending to wrap up the remaining plot threads and it's clearly a one-shot. I'm not sure if it's a good or a bad thing. xD

Books read : 28/52 (+5)
Week : 32/52

Anime watched in July 2014

This month, I watched more anime to make up for last month. xD

:bulletblue: Mekakucity Actor (12 episodes)
I watched this without knowing anything of the original story, so I was a bit confused, but I think I understood most of what was going on. I probably missed important things but I don't mind - what matters to me when watching anime or movies is to feel that I understand - if I don't understand ANYTHING or feel like I don't, I can get really frustrated. Thankfully, this was not the case here. What I don't get is why people seem to love the black-haired Konoha specifically - I prefer the white one, but I'm probably missing something xD

:bulletblue: Selector Infected WIXOSS (12 episodes)
I was warned: I knew before starting that this anime was going to be similar to Madoka. All along, I thought that maybe it was a bit too much like Madoka, to the point that it wasn't really interesting anymore - also the characters aren't quite as interesting as the Madoka characters in my opinion, and I'm not into card game anime, so the deconstruction aspects had less of an impact on me. But the final episode makes it obvious that Madoka is referenced here, not copied, and I'm looking forward to the sequel because IMO that's where the universe will show its full potential and it could be awesome.

:bulletblue: Kill la Kill (24 episodes)
I don't know what to think about this one. I suppose it's simply too far-fetched for me. I don't regret watching it, because now I can understand the references and appreciate the cosplay, and I ship Gamagoori / Mako (and possibly Ryuuko / Senketsu too xD). But I'm glad I had my embroidery project to keep me company through the first twelve episodes or so X_x

I'm also watching some of this season's anime, but I didn't find anything that I'd really recommend. Sabagebu! was funny at first, but it doesn't seem to be taking off... Oh, right, there's Free! Eternal Summer but it's a sequel, so it doesn't really count as a new anime XD
