Books read in October 2014

:bulletblue: Persuasion by Jane Austen (Reread)
So, this is technically a reread because I've read this novel before (like, five years ago?) but it didn't really feel like one because I remembered very little of the story. About five years ago, I had to read this book for an university exam (of the kind that came with a huge reading list), but because I hadn't planned things out properly, I had to read it in a hurry because I was trying to get through as many books as possible in a short amount of time. I didn't really enjoy it back then, mainly because I wasn't interested in the historical context, so I didn't understand a thing about manners and calling cards and that kind of stuff. Also, the English in this book is a tiny bit old-fashioned and more complicated that what I was used to, so I couldn't skim through it or I wouldn't understand what was going on. Now, I got interested in 19th-century history (and particularly upper-class life and manners) through various hobbies including Lolita fashion, I've read a few manner books from that period, so I was able to understand the storyline better and in the end, I quite enjoyed rereading this novel. This is good news to me, because I have another English literature reading list this year (much shorter and not actually compulsory, since I'm no longer majoring in English) and there's another Jane Austen book on it (I can't remember which one it is, chances are you'll see it pop up in next month's post or the month after's. ^_^

:bulletblue: Beowulf, Modern English translation by Lesslie Hall
This is probably not the best translation there is, but it appears to be old enough to be in the public domain, and so I got it for free. I read this because it was on a reading list for a university course (although another translation was recommended). The major downside of reading a free ebook as opposed to buying one / a printed book is that the layout and formatting were simply awful. books are usually decent in this regard - not stellar, but at least decent - so this came as a bad surprise. I'll have to check whether it's the file or my Kindle, though. In regard to the content, what I found particularly interesting was the fact that some names sound like Tolkienverse names, because Tolkien drew inspiration from early English languages to create the languages of his world. I totally picture Grendel as an Orc xD or like the big goblin in The Hobbit. For this reason, even though the plot isn't the deepest (the story is literally a thousand years old!), I had fun reading this book. ^^

:bulletblue: Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë
Another classic from my reading list. I enjoyed it because it has interesting character development.

Books: 43/52 (+3)
Week: 44/52

I didn't have time to read too many books this month, but I'm determined to complete this challenge. However, as I have probably said before, I don't think I will be taking the challenge again next year. I actually half wanted to drop it right now, because reading books with a deadline isn't nearly as fun, and the challenge is also giving me workload management / priority issues. So is the anime challenge.

Anime watched in October 2014

:bulletblue: First 7 episodes of Rozen Maiden
I had been wanting to watch this anime for quite some time, mainly because it is based off a manga by Peach-Pit. But Rozen Maiden didn't catch my interest and I ended up dropping it.

:bulletblue: First 6 episodes of Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi
I think this one was recommended to me by someone from dA, but I'm not sure who (Sorry >.<). I'm enjoying it, it's just that I haven't had time to finish watching it just yet. ^^

This month, I procrastinated quite a lot with this challenge, and so it was only earlier this week that I decided to drop Rozen Maiden and look for something else to watch. That's why I wasn't able to watch something else in full. If I'm to count this season's anime as well, I suppose I can say I've reached my monthly goal (First 4 episodes of Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de), of Sora no Method and of Cross Ange - btw I'm dropping the latter unless today's episode gets really positive feedback for something else than the boobs - and first 5 episodes of Selector spread WIXOSS - the first three episodes were waaaay too slow-paced IMO, but it's getting better since ep. 4). But the reason why I oiginally took on this challenge was to go through my to-watch list of finished anime, not to watch new ones, so I'm going to try and make up for this "cheat" next month. ^^
