The waterfall.
That's it. It should be over there.
Except it isn't.
Actually, wasn't there originally more than one? Like, three of them?
Not sure.
The elevator will be broken, of course.

I haven't been on the island many times, but I remember it quite well, from seeing it through my Goddess's eyes. This time, it will be the other way round. I was repairing my little house, just a normal house, and then I remembered the island. A long time ago, the Goddess left this world. It seems like the island has been deserted ever since.

(And then my Goddess says, I wonder if people settled on it.
That would be fun.
But I'm skeptical.)

The elevator is indeed broken. About half the wooden platform is gone, and there's water everywhere, flowing, I forgot to bring a bucket, there's no way I can get to the basement, never mind, it could be worse. At least there isn't any lava.

I swim away.

The waterfall is right there, and I'm not sure if that's where it's supposed to be. Never mind. It's a long way up, I have trouble catching my breath, I'm still not too good at riding those. I wonder what it will be like up there. Is there still any such thing as 'up there'?
There has to be. That water has to be falling from somewhere, after all.

The waterfall leads up to the edge of the island - a flying island it is. The whole thing is impractical, setting foot on the island itself isn't easy, I fall down into the sea, then I get back up - I thought the waterfall led to the center of the island, something has changed, this is not the work of my Goddess.

Here I am. This is the largest floor of the complex known as the flying island. Come to think of it, I don't remember how many floors there are. Two? Three? I'm not sure.

The first building I come across is suspended in mid air with only a staircase to support it. The inside is divided into small boxes - rather, it was - some walls are missing. All the doors are still there, some open, some closed. The sheep - they were all killed, of course.

Didn't this building have two floors?
The last time I saw it...
And now there's a hole right in front of me.
What a waste.

Now I am at the center of the island. It seems to be some kind if square. There is a Nether portal, surrounded by flames. It wasn't there before.

(And my Goddess says, why open a portal there? I don't know what to answer.)

The island has changed.
It means someone came to live here, doesn't it?
They didn't just destroy buildings. They built their own.
What if they're still here?
Maybe I'm not alone.

The sound of a door opening, or closing, where did that come from? There must be someone. This is creepy... Should I search for that person? No - I'm not in the mood for this - what if I can't find them?

There's a house.
It is square, made of wooden planks and stone, without any details. How unoriginal.

The sound of a door again - I catch a glimpse of a person in a full diamond suit of armor.
So there is someone.
I don't follow them.

A cobblestone wall covered in wooden placards. "Do not burn the trees". They set their own rules. "No destroying other people's houses". There is really no need for this reminder. Well, there must be, or it wouldn't be there. "No killing other people's dogs". How do they get the dogs to follow them up here?

"This sign's useless but I'm putting it here just cuz I'm bored."

It seems like my Goddess's island has become the cradle of a new civilization.
(She was right after all.)

Suddenly I realize there are people around me, two or three of them, and the next time I look, the 'useless' sign is gone, and someone says, please don't write anything useless on the walls, only important stuff, so I tell them not to worry, I'm not writing anything on there - maybe they thought I wrote that one - and I don't plan on living here either, I'm just taking a look at what you built here, since this island was built by someone I know.

(I swear, I didn't tell them that she's a Goddess. I'm pretty sure I didn't tell them anything of that kind.)

The floor above is unfinished, my Goddess left it that way. Its shape is that of a cross, with one branch thinner than the others. There is a massive wooden staircase leading up to it.

Grunts and other disgusting sounds.
Monsters.
Where are they ?
I can't tell. I look around, but they're nowhere to be seen.
It suddenly occurs to me - could they be inside the staircase? If so, then there's nothing to worry about. I climb up the stairs and find myself on the highest floor of the island.

I can see the forest from above. It has dramatically shrunk in surface, as though most of the trees had been cut down, or burned. "Do not burn the trees" - so that was why. The forest is a mess. At least one species of tree has been completely wiped out.  Did the newcomers do this? Or did someone else come before them with the sole intent of destroying whatever they could find?

Up here is a house made entirely of birch logs. The sign in front of it says it's a bakery, and then "Do not trespass". I try and open the door - it's not even locked. Sorry, I think I am going to trespass anyway - or not, actually, since there's nothing interesting inside - it's just a big, nearly empty room.

On the other side of the island is a small flying platform, what's that called ? Stone bricks. I think I can see a wooden chest, someone must live up there. This woud be - a flying island on top of another?

Going back down to the largest floor, I notice that a part of the ground has been replaced with wooden planks. A flying platform, made of wooden planks as well, is hovering above it, and it's about the same shape. That would be a half-finished house. The wooden flooring must be visible from below, this is certainly NOT the work of my Goddess. What a shame, I tell myself.

(What about the hotel? the Goddess asks)

That's right - the hotel. I don't remember where it's located, so I decide to ask directions. A local tells me to follow him, but he doesn't seem to know where he's going. "I forgot", he says. Instead, he leads me to a hole in the ground, and leaps into it.
I leap as well.

I land in a small pool of water - there are monsters in there! There's a fight going on. It's nearly over, I'm not needed. It's not like I can help anyway - those water currents - I have a hard time just getting out of there.
My Goddess would never, ever leave a pool of water in such a state.

I eventually find the hotel. The entrance was originally at the top, but I couldn't find it, so I suppose it is now sealed. The hotel can now be entered through a hole in the corner wall of the second floor. There is a space between it and me, below me is nothingness - this place is so high, I can't even see the ocean, but I know it's there, it's no big deal if I fall down - I jump - it's okay, I've landed - safely - on the wooden floor of the building that used to be a hotel.

It hasn't changed much. The lights, the chests, everything is exactly as I remember, except for the waterfall that was used to go from one floor to another - it's gone. All I can do is jump through the holes in the ground. It's dark in here - this floor has no lighting left, someone took the torches. That floor still has signs with the name of the person who used to live there - not unlike my Goddess, this person has gone missing a while ago.

Of all the people present on the island at this very moment, I am the only one who knows its history.
Should I do anything about it?

I jump through the hole in the lowest floor, into the ocean.

(As I swim back home, my Goddess tells me:
"I'd like to know more about these people up there."
Seems like I am to pay them another visit.)
Here is a bit of context :
=kalistina and I used to play on the same Minecraft server, and she built a flying island there. She later left the server, so the island was left unattended. A few weeks ago, I decided to go have a look at it, while chatting with =kalistina on Skype. It was a strange and interesting experience, so I wrote it from the point of view of my 'character'.

Thanks to =kalistina and *DreamyWind for beta-reading the text.

The preview image is a screenshot I took later. It shows the center of the island.
